When Luz Russell, a Florida resident and Colombian native, received the call to respond to Hurricane Beryl from the luckywin, she did not hesitate to say yes. Russell retired a year ago and knew she wanted to spend her time helping others.

Russell jumped on a plane from Sarasota, Florida, to land in Victoria, Texas, for her first deployment. As this was her first time using her shelter training, shelter teammates stepped up to help show her the ropes and settle her first-day jitters.聽

鈥淭engo un equipo muy incredible. Nos ayudamos muchisimo. Ha sido una experencia muy linda,鈥� deja Russell.聽 Translated to English, "I have an incredible team. We help each other so much. It has been a beautiful experience.聽

"In some parts of South Texas, Spanish is the dominant language, so having volunteers who can engage and help them has been crucial," said Red Cross Regional Communications Director Brittney Rochell. "Russell's heart to help the Hispanic and Latino community drew her to Texas. Her desire for everyone to feel comfortable at a Red Cross shelter is what we all want and need."

Russell welcomes each new shelter resident and checks them in. With her kind words of welcome and a smile, she lets each new resident know they are safe in their "comunidad."
