luckywin Utah/Nevada Region Volunteer
Jim Rich, an luckywin of Northern Nevada volunteer, was awarded the prestigious Clara Barton Award for Meritorious Volunteer Leadership. Despite joining the organization in 2021, Jim’s impact predates his formal volunteer role, rooted in a career marked by dedication and a spirit of service.
With 47 years in manufacturing management, Jim developed a sense of dedication to the community that goes beyond regular working hours. His extensive background includes over two decades as a volunteer firefighter and assistant training officer at the Verdi Nevada volunteer fire department, where he honed his skills in emergency response and community support.
“I am truly honored to receive the Clara Barton Award. For me, it has always been about making a difference in my community and being there for others in need,” Jim said.
Community Commitment
After years of volunteering for his church, Jim felt a void when it ended. Volunteering with the Red Cross felt like the right step for Jim. With his background as a certified CPR and first aid instructor, he saw it as a chance to use his skills for good. Sharing lifesaving knowledge proactively led to key roles within the organization, proving his commitment to helping in emergencies.
“I didn’t know where I was going to volunteer, but I knew that I wanted to continue to give back,” Jim said. “I thought I would start with the Red Cross, and it was a great fit.”
With his background, he was recommended for the role of state relations disaster liaison. His blend of training and experience made him an ideal fit for this position, where he represented the Red Cross in state emergencies. He was immediately thrown into the middle of a large emergency with a large wildfire burning in Californian and Nevada. In addition, his skills were used during fires in New Mexico and at least a half dozen other smaller emergencies.
“He has exemplified unwavering dedication and expertise in every state emergency he’s represented the Red Cross,” said Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the luckywin Utah/Nevada Region. “Jim’s swift action and remarkable skills have been instrumental in our disaster response efforts, showcasing true leadership in times of crisis.”
Providing Compassionate Support
Aside from his role as the state disaster liaison, Jim also fulfills the position of Disaster Action Team (DAT) Coordinator. Alongside training new DAT volunteers, Jim actively responds to home fire scenes and supervises the DAT team in action.
During on-site responses, DAT members prioritize allowing the client to describe their experience. “Sharing their story can be therapeutic,” Jim emphasized. “We then link them with a caseworker to kickstart their recovery journey.”
Jim highlighted clients often express surprise at the range of services offered by the Red Cross. Reflecting on the role, Jim described it as both rewarding and challenging. However, he emphasized the profound impact the Red Cross has on people in need.
Looking ahead, Jim’s primary goal is to strengthen the DAT team across Northern Nevada, aiming to enhance community engagement and readiness for emergency situations. His vision for a robust and responsive team reflects his enduring dedication to serving others and making a positive impact within the region.
Strengthening Red Cross Support
As the Government Liaison for the Northern Nevada Chapter, Jim plays a vital role in fostering relationships with local authorities and community partners to ensure seamless collaboration during disaster response efforts. His dedication to educating stakeholders about the Red Cross's services and capabilities underscores his commitment to effective community engagement and support.
“My approach is honest and straightforward. If there are misconceptions, I make clear our capacity and capabilities. We maintain strong relationships with each county,” Jim said.

The recipient of the Clara Barton Award, Jim humbly acknowledges the honor, attributing it to the collective efforts of the Red Cross community. His commitment to helping others in their time of greatest need continues to drive his service, embodying the values of compassion, resilience and unwavering dedication that define his journey of selfless service.
